Elephants are the largest mammals on land. There are two different kinds of elephants . One is the African elephant and the other is the Asian elephant. The Asian elephant has smaller ears and tusks. She is called the matriarch. All the other elephants follow behind her. Elephants are mammals. They eat grass, leaves and tree bark. A full grown African elephant can weigh more than 10,000 pounds. Elephants have 4 teeth and 2 tusks. The tusks are the two things that look like horns coming out the side of their mouths. The tusks grow 7 inches a year and can get up to 20 feet long. Their tusks are made of ivory which is very valuable. The Elephants four teeth are molars. An adults molars can grow up to ten inches long. The ears of a full grown African elephant Can be about 5 to 6 feet long and 4 feet wide. A elephants trunk is part of the nose and upper lip. They use their trunks to breath, put food in their mouths, pick up things and spray water with it. When it is hot elephants like to get into water and mud.They also pick up water an dirt with their trunks and spray it on themselves.
