The African elephant is bigger and taller than the Asian elephant. Elephants live in groups which is called a herd. The leader of the group is usually the oldest female elephant. She is called the matriarch. All the other elephants follow behind her. Elephants are mammals. They eat grass, leaves and tree bark. A full grown African elephant can weigh more than 10,000 pounds. Elephants have 4 teeth and 2 tusks. The tusks are the two things that look like horns coming out the side of their mouths. The tusks grow 7 inches a year and can get up to 20 feet long. When it is hot elephants like to get into water and mud. They also pick up water an dirt with their trunks and spray it on themselves. Wrinkles on thee elephants skin can be quite helpful when it comes to warm weather. The wrinkles on them trap the water and it helps to cool them down. Elephants talk to each other by making sounds called tummy rumbles. They also make trumpeting sounds to call to each other. These animals can live as long as eighty years. You will see elephants in the zoo. Most zoo keepers work very hard to keep elephants happy by giving them the habitat they would have if they were in the wild. Lots of elephants have been shot so people could get their ivory tusks. People from all over the world have tried to stop these cruel people killing the elephants. Now not many are killed and there are laws to protect the elephants. A while ago elephants were trained to preform tricks for the circus. Trainers used to be very cruel to these poor animals. A elephant is a popular animal . The African elephants are described as loxadonta africana. The Indian elephants are described as elephas maximus. Our inquiry unit this term is called "Float On By". We are designing a Christmas float for the Christmas parade. We could either do it in groups or as a whole class. Room 7 is designing their Christmas float in groups. In my group I have Shaylah, Leteisha, Olivia, Ben and I. We have thought about what we might have on our float. For our float to get into the Christmas parade, we have to have the best designed float. The whole school is doing it so it will be a really hard competition. We will need costumes. The winning team will give the rest of the school different jobs like one class could have to make snowflakes if part of your design was to have snowflakes dangling from the top of your float. You hope you win or you could get a really hard job. The most important rule is NO SANTA CLAUS. I am really looking forward to the Christmas parade.
